Dark Sky Reserve
Whereas STRAVON sits on the edge of it, DARK SKY sits right in the middle of it - a 4,300sq km area, almost totally devoid of light pollution*.
The Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve is not only the southern hemisphere’s first & world’s largest dark sky reserve, it is simply a stargazing mecca. The fact that part of the area is a World Heritage Site only adds to it's mystery - as by day, this region encompasses the magnificence of the Southern Alps and the wonders of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. But when the sun sets, the area gets shrouded in such a darkness* that the stars, planets & auroras seem to dance.
