Introduced

For a time New Zealand became a bit of an Ark with everything from Axis Deer to Zebra being brought here for possible liberation. Without going into too much detail, some of these introductions were successful, some were not and some (such as the possum) were a catastrophic disaster.

Chamois Introduced

Held in this crate, about to be fired across the Hooker River on a flying fox is the first Chamois being liberated into New Zealand. This gift (with seven others) from Franz Joseph I, the Austrian Emperor found the conditions of it’s new homeland perfect and have spread rapidly through the South Island’s Southern Alps.

Red Stag introduced into Otago

March, 1871: Seven deer were released into the picturesque landscape of the Lindis Pass and Otago's famed Red Stag were born.
