The Elk are a native animal from America.  New Zealanders and Indian people call them Wapiti.  The President of the U.S.A Theodore Roosevelt acquired some Elk for New Zealand which formed the Fiordland National Park (now World Heritage site) herd. Elk were imported to New Zealand from U.S.A in 1905 and released at George Sound, Fiordland.  For half a century there was some of the best hunting in world to be had in New Zealand.  The next 50 years depends on good management by the New Zealand Government for the many who wish an Elk herd to survive in the wild.  There is a large population of Elk in New Zealand, with selective breeding techniques they are developing very large antlers and body mass.  The bugle of an Elk is a sound that has to be experienced.
For then you will see this magnificent animal in it's full glory.

The 'Bugle of an Elk' is considered as legendary as the songs of the Sirens.  It is truly magical, almost musical yet strangely hypnotic.  When you catch sight of the massive antlers of these huge beasts, it is a sight which will never be forgotten.
